Writing a lament psalm
Our lament bears fruit, and we see the change within our own hearts. Not standing ovations. We see provision or healing or justice. Lament gazes unflinchingly at the present reality of pain and at God's apparent slowness to save. Simply follow the pattern. Needless to say, it too was super fun. Imagine that God is with you and that He has given you complete freedom to lay it all out, to complain fearlessly without judgment, in order to get it all off your chest. Generally, there is agreement on a system that includes at least these five types: psalms of lament, royal psalms, thanksgiving psalms, wisdom psalms, and then a mix of smaller genres such as historical and prophetic psalms. The psalmists pray in vivid terms about their anger and grief. Why did you let this happen? Could you speak to God this way? Usually, these songs start on a negative, complaining note, but they end on a positive, faith-filled note.
